UPDATE: Highway 401 reopened after crash near Tilbury

Highway 401 has been reopened in Chatham-Kent following a crash that sent three people to hospital.

Officers said an eastbound transport truck drove through the highway's cable barrier on Tuesday at around 7:15 a.m. and crashed into two westbound transport trucks near the Merlin Road overpass.

All three drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to officers, one of the trucks was hauling oxygen tanks, so each tank had to be removed before the truck could be towed. A significant amount of fuel was spilled onto the roadway, which also delayed clean up.

Drivers experienced major slowdowns along the highway just past Chatham after the OPP were forced to shut down the westbound lanes at Bloomfield Road.

Police said officers have also charged a pickup truck driver with careless driving after a motorist allegedly tried to cross over the median near the scene of the crash.

OPP said this pickup truck got stuck in the centre median of the Hwy. 401 when the driver tried to cross over into the other lanes to avoid delays caused by a crash.
