Toyota recall says airbags may spray shrapnel if they burst

Toyota is recalling approximately 70,000 vehicles in Canada and the U.S. due to a danger posed by the airbags.

The recall involves certain Toyota 2003-2004 Corollas, 2002-2003 Sequoias, 2003 Tundras and 2002-2003 Lexus SC vehicles. In Canada, there are 5,369 vehicles involved in this recall and the rest are in the U.S.

Toyota said the front passenger airbag inflators have a safety defect that may cause them to rupture and spray sharp metal fragments at the driver and passengers, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.

The automaker said owners of the involved vehicles will get notification by first class mail starting in early January.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator or the airbag assembly for free.
