Cable barriers stop truck cross-over

The cable barriers that separate the eastbound and westbound Highway 401 through Elgin County did their job on Monday.

The Ontario Provincial Police in Elgin County said a truck was heading west on Highway 401 near Downie Line in the Rodney area around 4 p.m. when a tire blew. The truck went into the median where it hit the high tension cables. The cables prevented the truck from reaching the eastbound lanes, as it came to a stop on the shoulder.

The West Elgin Fire Department was called to the scene because the truck was carrying flammable liquids, however, no leak was reported. There were also no injuries reported. Two other eastbound vehicles were damaged by debris that was created by the truck hitting the cables.

The eastbound lanes were closed briefly to allow crews to remove the truck.
