Stargazers will soon be treated to an incredible show in the sky.
On the evening of January 20 and into the early morning hours of January 21, the moon will undergo a full lunar eclipse resulting in a Super Blood Wolf Moon.
An eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and a full moon line up perfectly and the moon then falls into Earth's shadow. The sun's light then reflects onto the surface of the moon, turning it a radiant burnt-orange colour, known as a "Blood Moon".
A Super Moon occurs when the moon moves closer to Earth and appears larger than normal. A Wolf Moon is a name given to a full moon in January.
Unless there is heavy cloud coverage, the eclipse should be fairly easy to see. Unlike solar eclipses, backyard astronomer Gary Boyle said this event that is perfectly safe to look at directly.
"Very safe to look at; gorgeous to look at. It can be seen from the city, but if people can, they should get out to the country," said Boyle. "It's a great time for a photo op, it's nature in motion."
To celestial event will be visible at the following times in Eastern Time Zones starting January 20:
-Partial umbral eclipse begins 10:34 p.m.
-Total lunar eclipse begins 11:41 p.m.
-Mid-eclipse 12:12 a.m.
-Total lunar eclipse ends 12:43 a.m.
-Partial umbral eclipse ends 1:51 a.m.
