Food waste study

Two groups are releasing a report on food waste.

And they are calling it a crisis.

Second Harvest and Value Chain Management joined together to put the report together.

Some of the points that will be highlighted include:

  • 58 per cent of all food produced - 35.5 million metric tonnes - is lost or wasted
  • Only 42 per cent of all food produced in Canada ever makes it to market
  • 11.2 million metric tonnes of lost food could be rescued
The research released Thursday provides new baseline data, taken directly from industry, on the size and scale of Canada’s food waste crisis, and offers a timeline of achievable solutions for industry, government and consumers to rescue and redistribute surplus food.

Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and expert in perishable food recovery.

Value Chain Management International (VCMI) has authored/co-authored several publications on food loss and waste.
