UPDATE: Serious crash on Hwy. 401 turns fatal

A serious two-vehicle crash that closed a section of Highway 401 in Tilbury for several hours Monday afternoon has taken a tragic turn.

The driver and only occupant of the passenger vehicle that was involved in the crash -- who was rushed to hospital in critical condition -- has died, according to a family member who contacted BlackburnNews.com.

Provincial police said a passenger vehicle struck the rear of a tractor trailer in the eastbound lanes between County Road 42 and Queens Line, at around 12 p.m. on Monday.

The driver of the car was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of the highway at Mill Street (Interchange 56) to allow officers to conduct an investigation at the scene. The highway was reopened to traffic at around 6 p.m.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
