Ice jam moves to Lighthouse Cove

An ice jam on the Thames River that started just west of Chatham has moved to Lighthouse Cove.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) said the jam formed around Prairie Siding on Thursday afternoon, but let loose and began to move downstream.

The broken ice has made its way to Lighthouse Cove, but stopped short of Lake St. Clair just before midnight.

It's not clear whether the ice will cause flooding in the community, but with the temperature forecasted to drop this weekend, the LTVCA said if the ice doesn't move into the lake, it will likely freeze in place.

Water levels in Chatham have started to drop, but the ice jam could cause the water to rise again.

The LTVCA continues to operate the 6th Street Dam and Pumping Station to protect the south end of the city on McGregor Creek from flooding.

Officials are once again reminding residents to stay away from the water and ice.
