The Detroit Health Department (DHD) is reporting more possible fumes from the Marathon Petroleum refinery in southwest Detroit.
The DHD said it was notified by the Department of Homeland Security Friday afternoon of the potential emission of natural gas fumes at around 3 p.m. because of a faulty flare.
Smelly fumes also spewed into the air on February 1 and February 2 because of a malfunctioning flare but the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) said its monitors have not indicated that those fumes had dangerously high levels of toxic substances.
However, the DHD warned that the odours from the facility may cause some people to have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, or difficulty breathing. They urge people to keep their windows closed and visit their doctor if they are experiencing severe symptoms.
Marathon Petroleum said it continues to monitor the air in nearby communities and continues to share results with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the City of Detroit.
Marathon said repairs to the malfunctioning flare are underway.
