The Windsor Spitfires gained another point but fell once again in a shootout.
The Spitfires forced overtime in Mississauga Sunday afternoon but lost 3-2 to the Steelheads. During a period in the season where every point counts, the Spitfires gained one to get to 48, but are just three points in the final playoff spot ahead of the Erie Otters.
C.J. Clarke's first-period goal put the Steelheads on the board first. Mississauga outshot the Spitfires 16-10 in the first 20 minutes.
Windsor tied the game close to the halfway point of the middle frame, with a power-play goal from Tyler Angle, his 16th goal of the season. But Mississauga stole the lead back with one second left in the period on a Nick McHugh score.
Overtime was forced when Cole Purboo tied the game for the Spits on the power play at 17:35 in the final period. The shootout ensued when the extra period came and went without a winner. Cole Carter's successful shot for Mississauga was the only one for either side in the shootout.
Colton Incze fell in the Windsor net for the second night in a row, stopping 51 shots. Jacob Ingham had 27 saves for the Steelheads.
The Spitfires will try to rack up those important points when they welcome the Sarnia Sting to the WFCU Centre on Thursday, Valentine's Day.
