Farmers in Grey and Bruce get a chance to share concerns

Grey and Bruce County farmers made their concerns known to politicians at a meeting in Elmwood.

The day long Politicians Meeting on Saturday saw a series of presentations by commodity groups and farm organizations.

Federal, provincial and municipal representatives were on hand to hear the concerns. It's an annual joint venture by the Bruce and Grey County Federations of Agriculture. Bruce Federation president John Rodgers says such a meeting is crucial in the changing climate of agriculture.

"So this is a good way for us to express the priorities of our members. This is an iconic industry in Grey and Bruce Counties, agriculture, and it's a big industry so it's important that our politicians have an understanding about what our needs are," said Rodgers.

Among the many topics covered were farm tax assessment, barriers to younger people getting into farming, new animal transportation regulations and an update on the effort to bring natural gas to the area.
