Two months after Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR), a service contracted out by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, opened the doors to a new location, they are hoping a day of putts, pars, and pitches will help them financially.
PAWR is gearing up for its first annual golf tournament at Willow Ridge Golf Course on July 13.
"Currently, they’ve exceeded their goal of $3,500 in prizes, and are still continuing to add to the potential winnings for participants," the not-for-profit group said in a statement. "The money is being raised for shelter purposes... food costs, vetting costs, litter costs."
April Colby, a representative with the shelter, said this tournament is coming on the heels of a crazy few months for PAWR.
"We're just hoping to have a great day anything raised we're happy with," she said. " We've put too much work into this to really focus on not having a good time."
Colby said the unrealistic goal would be to have enough players to put two teams on each hole of the course. She said, however, they are anticipating roughly 20 teams competing in the inaugural tournament.
Although the first tournament is only a week away, Colby said plans are already in place for hosting a tournament next year.
The $100 (per-person) registration fee for the tournament includes admission into the 18-hole tournament, an afternoon snack, steak dinner, and free use of the driving range and a free bucket of balls.
Door prizes include a T.V. and headphones. Bob's MotorSport will also be giving away a four-wheeler for one lucky golfer who sinks a hole-in-one, said Colby.
