UPDATE: Funnel cloud spotted near Leamington

Watch out for funnel clouds on Wednesday.

Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent Wednesday afternoon as conditions were favourable for the development of funnel clouds. However, the advisory ended at 4:34 p.m.

The agency said a few showers had developed over the area and there was a report of a funnel cloud near Leamington early Wednesday afternoon.

"These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms," said Environment Canada. "This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground but there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado."

Environment Canada is reminding the public to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously.

"Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter," the agency added. "These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning."
