26-year-old man charged with robbery after allegedly assaulting two strangers

One person has been sent to the hospital following a Wednesday night assault in Chatham.

The incident occurred on King Street around 6:30 p.m. Police said a 26-year-old man approached a stranger walking in the area and allegedly hit him while trying to steal cigarettes.

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Law enforcement was called to the scene after a concerned witness saw it unfold and dialled 911.

The suspect then fled the area, police said, and before he was apprehended, allegedly assaulted another victim in the area of Barthe Street. The second person did not sustain any injuries, though.

The 26-year-old man was later arrested on Grand Avenue has been charged with robbery and assault.

He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
