UPDATE: Search and rescue effort for missing swimmer in Lake St. Clair

Fire and police officials in Tecumseh, along with multiple other agencies, were busy Saturday evening in the rescue effort for a person in Lake St. Clair.

According to a Tecumseh OPP, the search started around 5:45 p.m. Saturday after reports of a person in the water near Lakewood Park.

The report was prompted after several occupants of a boat, anchored approximately one-half kilometer offshore near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Manning Road, entered the water to swim and one of the occupants did not return to the boat. As of Sunday morning, the person remains missing.

OPP, Essex and Chatham-Kent County marine units, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center,  the United States Coast Guard, the Windsor Police and Royal Canadian Mounted Police marine units and Tecumseh Fire Rescue Service all assisted in the search.

The search and rescue operation was conducted until shortly after 9:15 p.m. Saturday and then called off due to darkness. The OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will attend the scene on Sunday  to continue what they are now deeming a recovery operation.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
