Chatham man smashes police cruiser windshield

A 23-year-old Chatham man is facing three charges after a violent run-in with the law on the holiday Monday.

Police said they found the man outside of a residence in Chatham Monday afternoon after getting a call about a disturbance there.

When officers arrived, the man was reportedly carrying a six to seven-foot-long 4"x4" piece of wood in his hands. When he was ordered to drop it, the man allegedly charged at the officer and used the wood to smash a police cruiser's front windshield.

After that, the man allegedly ran back into the house and hid behind a family member, using them as a human shield against police.

Investigators said officers were able to safely separate the pair and arrested the man.

A 23-year-old Chatham man was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, assaulting police, and mischief. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

No injuries were reported.
