Ministry of Labour looking into fatal tree cutting incident

A man has died and an investigation is underway after a tree cutting incident in Chatham ended in tragedy.

Chatham-Kent police said emergency crews were called to the scene on Cornhill Street sometime Wednesday afternoon.

A 62-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene -- police did not release his name.

Officers said the Ministry of Labour was contacted and has taken over the investigation.

The ministry said the worker sustained fatal injuries while trimming a tree.

A Ministry of Labour inspector attended the scene but no orders or requirements have been issued at this time against the company called A-Let Shawn Trim It.

"Our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the worker who passed away," said ministry spokesperson Janet Deline.
