A Wallaceburg tool and die company is teaming up with St. Clair College to create a program that will help Chatham-Kent youth gain access to skilled trades training.
AarKel Tool and Die Inc., along with the college, will be delivering a customized program to train AarKel new hires in precision metal cutting CNC machining.
The initiative will provide AarKel with the chance to retain and grow its local operations and establish a locally-trained workforce.
Larry Delaey, president and CEO AarKel Tool and Die, said the partnership is a tremendous opportunity.
“We are committed to delivering industry-leading quality, value and turnaround times," said Dalaey. "These additional employees that will be trained and hired is an important milestone in our strategic plan for our Wallaceburg facilities and will enhance support to our operations in Wallaceburg."
Dalaey also mentioned the shortage of skilled trade workers in the area and said he hopes that the training program will help address the issue.
Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton was on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday at the new training room at AarKel's headquarters in Wallaceburg. He also touched on the importance of training young people for skilled labour careers.
“We know that Ontario is facing a looming problem: a shortage of skilled workers,” said McNaughton. “Seeing these investments in training the workers of tomorrow is fantastic news. We must continue to break the stigma that exists and show people that jobs in the skilled trades are meaningful, challenging and good-paying.”
