The Roman Catholic Diocese of London is using a day set aside for helping those less fortunate to announce its own initiative.
Bishop Ronald Fabbro is using Sunday's third annual World Day of the Poor to launch the diocese's new effort, the Pope Francis Fund for the Poor. Using proceeds from the sale of land near St. Peter's Seminary in London, a sum of $1-million is being used to start an endowment fund. Money from the fund will be distributed to agencies across southwestern Ontario that serve those struggling with poverty.
"The endowment will be a continuing source of assistance for those in need, as well as a reminder that we are truly missionary disciples of Christ," said Bishop Fabbro. "One million dollars is a considerable sum, but it is only a seed. I urge every parish and every individual in the diocese to consider how each of us is able to help our brothers and sisters in need. As your bishop, I warmly invite you to join this collective effort by making a donation to the Pope Francis Fund for the Poor."
Organizations will be asked to apply for funding, beginning in 2020. Agencies must include their name, mailing address, contact information for a representative, the amount requested, and a brief description of why the money is needed and how it will be used.
Applications will be taken between January 1 and February 28 for 2020, with money being distributed by the end of March. If an agency receives funding, it will be required to submit a detailed report to the diocese by the end of the calendar year, outlining how the money was spent.
Particulars on the fund will be discussed in a letter to the faithful, which will be distributed to parishioners across the diocese during this weekend's Masses.
