Cashier fights off robber in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are on the lookout for a man who tried to rob a local variety store over the weekend.

Police said they were called to Harvey Variety in Chatham shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday after a lone man who was wearing a balaclava walked into the store and demanded money while holding a weapon.

Officers said the cashier refused, adding that "a struggle ensued" before the man took off. Police said the cashier wasn't physically hurt as a result of the incident.

The man was last seen wearing a dark gray coat with three stripes down each sleeve, black cargo-style pants, black shoes with white around the soles, a black hood, and light-coloured gloves.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Rob Rose at robro@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6625. Anonymous callers can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.
