UPDATE: Rainfall warning ended

Residents in southwestern Ontario should expect a damp weekend as forecasters call for heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts.

Environment Canada upgraded a special weather statement to a rainfall warning early Friday morning for Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, Elgin County, and Sarnia-Lambton.

The weather agency is calling for light rain or drizzle throughout the day, however, heavy rainfall is expected to start on Friday night. Periods of heavy rainfall should taper off around Sunday morning.

Most of the rainfall is expected on Saturday with roughly 50 millimetres of precipitation. Strong winds may also gust up to 90 kilometres per hour -- especially along the Lake Erie shoreline -- on Sunday.

Early Sunday morning, Environment Canada ended the rainfall warning for much of the region.
