UPDATE: Multiple crashes shut down Highway 401

Police have reopened the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Chatham after police respond to multiple collisions on the highway due to poor weather conditions on Wednesday night.

The Ontario Provincial Police closed the westbound lanes at Bloomfield Road at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday following a crash involving three tractor-trailers. The highway was reopened just before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The eastbound lanes were closed in Lakeshore at County Road 31 (St. Joachim Road) for several hours starting at 7:30 p.m. due to another crash involving two transport trucks. The eastbound lanes were reopened at around 11 p.m.

"The OPP is urging motorists to avoid the 401 if possible until weather and road conditions improve," police said in a media release.

No information about injuries has been released.
