Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising even more financial help for different groups who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his daily address on Saturday, Trudeau revealed that The Canadian Red Cross will be receiving $100 million from Ottawa.
According to Trudeau, the organization has seen a decline in both volunteers and donations due to COVID-19.
"They've been playing a key role in supporting Canadians during this crisis, helping both individuals and communities with their most pressing needs," he said. "But, like many organizations, the Red Cross is facing an increased demand for its services."
Trudeau said that the funds will allow the Canadian Red Cross to continue its response to COVID-19 while also preparing for potential floods and wildfires in the country.
The federal government is also opening up its wallet for female business owners across the country who, Trudeau said, have suffered disproportionate effects of the pandemic.
As a result, the prime minister announced that the Government of Canada is committing $15 million in additional funding to support female entrepreneurs through the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy.
The money will go directly to select organizations that are currently WES Ecosystem Fund recipients and aims to help women entrepreneurs through the COVID-19 crisis.
"The obstacles associated with the pandemic are added to the number of obstacles women often face such as gender-based discrimination," said Trudeau.
In addition, he assured parents that more financial support is on its way.
Starting on July 20, the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will be increased accordingly for the upcoming year.
This is in addition to the one-time CCB increase in May of $300 per child.
"Every summer for the past three years, we've boosted the CCB to help keep up with the costs of living," explained Trudeau. "This summer will be no different. As the price of your groceries goes up, so will the benefit."
Trudeau also revealed some news on the medical front. According to the prime minister, Health Canada has approved the first Canadian clinical trials for a potential COVID-19 vaccine.
He called it encouraging news.
"The National Research Council of Canada will be working with the manufacturers so that if these vaccines trials are successful, we can produce and distribute them here at home," said Trudeau.
The prime minister is not expected to address Canadians on Sunday or Monday.
