The province has lifted restrictions on short-term rentals of cottages, cabins, lodges, homes, condominiums, and bed and breakfasts.
“Our government is carefully, but surely on the path to reopening the economy and this is an important step,” said Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP and Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton. “This will help unlock the return of tourism in this region and throughout the province.”
He added the approach to reopening allows business owners and service providers time to ensure workplaces are safe for staff, consumers, and the general public. McNaughton is reminding operators to continue to follow occupational health and safety guidelines and follow the advice of public health officials.
“Expanding the availability of short-term accommodations is an important part of Ontario’s reopening,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “Many people rely on the rental of these properties to supplement their income, and we know owners of these properties want to ensure a safe experience for their guests.”
The province said tourism is a $36 billion industry in Ontario, supporting thousands of small businesses across the province.
The province is also reminding owners to consult health and safety guidelines related to the tourism and hospitality sector when considering how they can reopen their doors to guests. McNaughton emphasized that operators and guests should continue to practice physical distancing, wear a face covering when physical distancing is a challenge, and wash hands frequently.
