As the economy gradually starts to reopen, Via Rail will change its policy to include the use of masks in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, effective June 23.
The country’s national passenger rail provider recently announced that passengers will have to wear a mask "at all times during their trip", except when eating or drinking.
Passengers will also be required to wear a mask at the station and while boarding when physical distancing cannot be maintained. However, young children and passengers with breathing difficulties will be exempt from the new policy.
Via Rail employees who deal with passengers face-to-face will also be required to wear a mask.
The company said the new policy falls in line with the latest Transport Canada guidelines regarding masks or face coverings for planes, trains, ships, and public transit.
Travelers are encouraged to bring their own masks as Via Rail has a limited number of disposable masks available for passenger-use.
The latest policy change follows several others that have been implemented in response to COVID-19. Complete meal services have been suspended for all routes and help with carry-on baggage is only being offered to those with limited mobility.
