Fresh peaches from California recalled due to salmonella concerns

Peaches imported from California are the latest form of produce being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a warning on Saturday advising the public, retailers, and food service establishments to not consume or serve peaches distributed by a California based company.

Prima Wawona, located in Fresno, California recalled fresh peaches under various brand names such as Sweet 2 Eat, Harvest Sweet, Wawona, Wegmans, and Extrafresh. Peaches that are from Canada are not affected by the recall.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The CFIA said suspected recalled products should be thrown out or returned to where they were purchased.
