The Chatham-Kent Gay Pride Association is working on bringing a safe and accepting space to Chatham's downtown.
The organization will be opening a new building in the coming months on Centre Street. The facility will be used for programming and events as well as a community space for the LGBTQ+ members and their allies.
According to Pride Association President Marianne Willson, the new facility was made possible because of Bill Brokenshire, who left a fund for the association to help it secure “a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community, their allies and partners to serve the needs of our community.”
Brokenshire lived his adult life in Toronto before passing away in 2018. In his honour, the community centre in the new building will be known as "Bill's Place."
“This special place will honour an incredible human being and his desire to help youth and marginalized people in Chatham-Kent,” explained Willson.
The building is currently undergoing renovations to create an open space that can meet the physical, social and mental health needs of Chatham-Kent’s LGBTQ+ residents.
Wilson said the building will be a safe place for people to go and will be a step towards making Chatham-Kent inclusive for all.
“As an organization, that’s our goal as well. The Chatham-Kent Gay Pride Association will work to serve our community through this centre," said Wilson. "We hope the programming, social opportunities, events and education we will provide in this space for youth, adults, families, and businesses will leave a positive and lasting impact on Chatham-Kent.”
