New contract at Cascades ratified

Unionized workers at Cascades Casino in Chatham have a new three-year contract.

Unifor Local 444 posted on its Facebook page that 87.3 per cent of the workers voted in favour of the deal.

The union announced the deal on Monday following a week of contract negotiations.

Talks for members who work at Gateway Point Edward are ongoing.

Cascades replaced the Dresden Raceway, and the workers' last contract expired November 11, 2020.

They agreed to work beyond the expiry date because of the pandemic.

"We were challenged by the company and forced to bargain in unprecedented and unknown times," wrote Chairperson of the bargaining committee, Jason Kearns. "Zoom sucks. It was an unusual and first-time experience to bargain in his manner, but we stuck together and we did it!"
