Vaccine eligibility expanded to 60+

People in the London region born in 1961 or earlier will soon be able to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Middlesex London Health Unit and Southwestern Public Health announced Monday that eligibility is being expanded to people age 60 and over as of Tuesday. According to the health units, you need not have turned 60 yet to be eligible, as long as your birth year is 1961.

“We continue to try to expand eligibility to additional age groups, as we continue to ensure that the vaccine we have on hand is put into arms as quickly as possible,” said Middlesex-London Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Alex Summers. “In addition to opening the booking system to those born in 1961 or earlier, we will also be booking vaccine appointments within a four week window tomorrow, so we expect there will be many appointments available.”

The health units say the move is in keeping with Phase Two of the province's vaccine distribution plan. The second phase determines eligibility based on age and at-risk populations. There was no word Monday on when local teachers and other education workers would be eligible.

On Tuesday, people born in 1961 or earlier are advised to book their appointments online at www.covidvaccinelm.ca. Phone bookings will be available, however health officials recommend against trying to book by phone since a very high volume of calls is anticipated. To book by phone, call 226-289-3560.
