Police investigating fatal train collision in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after a man who was lying in the middle of a rail crossing in Chatham Thursday night was struck and killed by a passenger train.

Police said they were called to the scene in the area of Bloomfield Road near Queens Line shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators said the VIA Rail train was heading west from Toronto to Windsor when it hit the man.

Police said the person who was hit -- a 38-year-old Chatham man -- sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The traffic unit has taken over the investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Dan Carroll at dancar@chatham-kent.ca or 519-355-1092.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
