Alleged arsonist arrested after two fires on Keil Drive

Chatham-Kent police have made an arrest in connection with a pair of suspicious fires on Keil Drive in Chatham over the weekend.

Police said on Saturday night, a box spring and a garbage bin were lit on fire behind Bowlerama -- two trailers were also lit on fire behind Value Village next door to the bowling alley.

Chatham-Kent Fire Chief Chris Case gave credit to firefighters for preventing the fire flames from spreading any further to the neighbouring buildings.

"The crews who were on duty Saturday night managed to prevent the trailer fire from getting into Value Village," said Case. "Another couple of minutes and you can imagine how big a fire at Value Village would be and how huge loss that would be to the community."

Police said the damage caused by the fires was estimated at $200,000.

Officers were able to identify the woman responsible after reviewing some video surveillance and arrested a 38-year-old woman of no fixed address.

She was charged with two counts of arson and one count of failing to comply with her release conditions because she was in possession of an incendiary device. She was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
