Thunderstorms and heavy downpours expected Wednesday afternoon

Slow-moving thunderstorms with heavy downpours are expected across most of Southern Ontario Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Windsor-Essex,  Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, London and Middlesex County, Elgin County, and Oxford County as a warm and humid tropical air mass moves across the area.

Local rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm in an hour or less along with wind gusts to 70 km/h are expected from some of the stronger thunderstorms. Small hail is also possible.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of London and eastern Middlesex County saying rainfall amounts of up to 50-75 mm could be possible for some areas. The weather agency rescinded the warning just over an hour later, a special weather statement remains in place.

The weather service said showers and thunderstorms are expected to end by Wednesday evening.
