Arrest made in theft of Black Lives Matter flag

Chatham-Kent police have made an arrest following the theft of a Black Lives Matter flag in Dresden.

Police said the flag was removed from the area of Main Street and North Street on June 19, 2021 and found in a nearby garbage can. The same flag was stolen the following day, according to police.

A suspect was identified and arrested on Monday. The 41-year-old Dresden man has been charged with theft under $5,000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000. He was released pending a future court date of August 11, 2021.

“We would like to remind everyone that hate or bias has no place in our society,” Chatham-Kent police said in a media release. “This behaviour will not be tolerated here in Chatham-Kent as this form of discrimination undermines everyone’s safety.”
