CK police rewarding kids for following rules of the road

Throughout the month of July, Chatham-Kent police will be handing out coupons to children in Wallaceburg for a free ice-cream cone.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service has partnered with the Wallaceburg Bike Rodeo Committee and The Sugar Shack for Wallaceburg Bike Safety Month.

Children seen obeying the rules of the road, like wearing a helmet while riding their bike, will receive a coupon.

Police officials said the committee started this new initiative after cancelling their annual bike rodeo for the second time due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"It’s imperative that we engage and educate our youth regarding bicycle safety and rules of the road to ensure all road users are safe," said Public Information Officer Const. Renee Cowell. "Initiatives like this, raise awareness for everyone. It’s really an opportunity to educate both children and parents."

According to Sugar Shack staff, a handful of children have already claimed their free ice-cream cone.

"They are coming and they are excited."

The Wallaceburg library branch is also participating by handing out free bike safety activity books with a chance to win prizes.
