Wheatley boater steps up to help out fellow mariner in medical distress

Leamington OPP are giving credit to a local boater for helping to prevent a tragedy on Lake Erie near the Wheatley Harbour.

Provincial police said they got a call at around 8:45 p.m. Thursday to help a boater in an 18-foot vessel that was out in the water.

Officers said two males were in the boat at the time and were having mechanical issues when one of the males started going into "medical distress."

Police said an officer who arrived at the Wheatley Harbour approached another boater who was also at the marina and that boater was able to help two the disabled boat to shore where paramedics were waiting. Paramedics then took the male to the hospital for treatment.

Officers said the unselfish act by the boater who helped them out was able to prevent the situation from turning into a tragedy.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
