A wet and windy start to the weekend

Residents of southwestern Ontario are being told to expect heavy rain as the weekend gets underway.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for London, Middlesex County, Elgin County, Oxford County, Chatham-Kent, Windsor, and Essex County.

The weather agency says the region will see rain that will be heavy at times, beginning Friday evening. It's possible the area will see 25-45 millimetres of rain by Saturday night, before falling temperatures lead to the development of light snow.

Forecasters are also calling for strong winds from the southwest on Saturday afternoon. Gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour are expected.

"By Saturday evening these winds are forecast to shift to the northwest with wind gusts up to 90 km/h possible," the advisory said.

Environment Canada says damage to trees and power outages are a possibility with winds of that strength.
