Police K9 Helix sniffs out alleged break-in suspect

A 36-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after a Chatham-Kent police dog allegedly caught him red-handed.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started when a white 2018 Chevy Silverado was reported stolen from a residence in Harwich Township early Thursday morning.

Police said shortly after that call, they got another call about a crash in the area of Rose Beach Line and Antrim Road involving a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they managed to confirm that it was the same vehicle that was reported stolen and that the driver had hit a pole before leaving the scene.

Police called in the K9 unit and police dog Helix was able to track down a suspect a kilometre away.

When officers found him, the man was allegedly found leaving a shed on a property that didn't belong to him. Further investigation showed that the man had also allegedly broken into a trailer on the property.

The accused was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, possession of stolen property, and two counts of breaking and entering. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
