Ontario colleges reach agreement with faculty union

The union representing 16,000 faculty at Ontario's 24 public colleges has called off plans to strike.

Late Thursday evening, the College Employer Council announced it has reached an agreement with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, avoiding a strike that was scheduled to commence at 12:01 a.m. Friday. All work-to-rule activities, which began in December, will also end.

Both sides have entered a binding interest arbitration, which means both parties authorize that a neutral third party can come in to assist with any outstanding issues to find a compromise.

The agreement was reached just over an hour left before the strike deadline. Over 250,000 students across Ontario would have been impacted had the strike gone ahead.
