Crash in Chatham Township claims the life of 19-year-old

Chatham-Kent police are investigating a single-vehicle crash just east of Chatham that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man and seriously injured his 19-year-old passenger.

Police said they were called to the scene on McNaughton Line East near Caledonia Road at around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Officers said their investigation so far shows that a 2002 Ford Sport Trek was heading east on McNaughton Line when it went off the road and rolled several times.

Police said both of the occupants of the vehicle were ejected and the vehicle started on fire after it stopped rolling.

The driver -- a 19-year-old man -- was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger -- a 19-year-old woman -- was airlifted to a London hospital with life threatening injuries.

The Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Unit is taking the lead on the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Lisa Rodger at lisaro@chatham-kent.ca or 519-355-1092.
