Wanted man arrested after stabbing, shooting reported in Chatham

A 43-year-old Chatham man is facing several weapons-related charges after police followed up on a couple of tips about a stabbing and a shooting in the city.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started Monday evening when they received reports of a stabbing at a residence on Stanley Avenue in Chatham.

Officers said they were able to find the alleged victim and learned that the incident had taken place on Sunday. Their investigation also showed that a firearm had gone off and police later spoke to neighbours who reported hearing a loud bang.

Officers managed to identify a suspect and said he surrendered himself to police after about an hour of negotiations at his residence.

A search of the man allegedly turned up several rounds of ammunition and some methamphetamine. Officers said when they searched the man's residence, they also found a taser and a sawed-off rifle.

The accused was charged with four counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order along with one count of drug possession.

Officers said the man they arrested was also wanted by police for failing to attend court.

He was taken into custody and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.
