CK Fire warning residents to stay off Chatham bridge

Safety concerns over a local bridge are prompting Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue to issue a warning to residents.

Fire officials are asking people to stay off the Black Bridge in Chatham.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, emergency crews responded to the bridge for reports of a fire.

"Crews arrived to find railway ties and wooden bridge decking ignited and the fire was quickly extinguished," CK Fire said through a media release. "There was severe damage to the structure and large gaps in the decking have affected the integrity bridge."

The Black Bridge, which runs over the Thames River between Stanley Avenue and Grande Avenue East, is private property and fire officials are also reminding residents that anyone accessing the area is trespassing.
