A Chatham-Kent family is mourning the loss of a loved one following a fatal workplace accident in Dawn-Euphemia.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) told CK News Today it is investigating the death of a worker who was fatally injured while cutting down a tree.
Jocelyn Reaume has identified the worker as her father, 54-year-old Duane Reaume of Dover Centre, who was killed on October 26, 2022.
"He is so loved and so missed! I will always feel this loss, but I hope one day instead of crying when I think of him, I can smile and feel that pooling blanket of warmth and love," Jocelyn said. "Thank you so much for the outpouring of love, it is felt deeply and we are so happy to have such a great support system through this challenging time."
The ministry said it has issued three orders to the employer, John Harris Concrete Ltd. and one order to White's Construction Thamesville Ltd. A ministry inspector has been assigned to the case and the investigation continues. The ministry said it can't yet divulge what the orders are or the cause of death.
"Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of this worker," said ministry spokesperson Anu Dhar. "As the investigation is ongoing, we’re unable to provide additional details at this time."
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Duane Reaume of Dover Centre in his 54th year. Duane was a hard-working guy, a "Mr. Fix It" and “Jack of all trades” and because of this he would always help anyone who needed a hand or favor," read Mr. Reaume's obituary. "He was a person you could rely on, and yet in helping others he never asked for anything in return."
His daughter said her beloved father loved the outdoors, fishing, and wildlife. The obituary also said Duane didn't judge and he always took people at face value. He was open-minded, very funny, and will be remembered for his distinctive laugh.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home at 245 Wellington West in Chatham on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mr. Reaume will be cremated and his funeral is on Saturday.
