Much of southwestern Ontario under a freezing rain warning

Portions of southwestern Ontario may see some significant ice accumulation Wednesday.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, Sarnia-Lambton, Huron-Perth, Elgin, Norfolk, and Oxford Counties. The warning replaces a winter storm watch for much of the region. However, Grey and Bruce counties are still under a winter storm warning.

Forecasters say accretion may be from five to ten millimetres toward Lake Erie, with as much as 20 mm toward Lake Huron, especially on elevated surfaces.

"Light snow and ice pellets Wednesday morning will change over to freezing rain Wednesday afternoon," read the alert. "Temperatures are expected to be just below freezing, so the greatest ice accretion may be confined to elevated surfaces. Freezing rain is expected to change over to rain Wednesday night as temperatures rise above freezing. Gusty northeasterly winds will diminish early Thursday morning."

Depending on the location, wind gusts could range between 40 kilometres per hour and 70 km/h.

Some areas may see some additional mixed precipitation on Thursday.

Surfaces such as roads, highways, bridges, and parking lots may become slippery, and power outages may also occur.
