Funnel clouds possible for southwestern Ontario

Environment Canada says conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds Tuesday afternoon and evening.

A weather advisory has been issued for Sarnia-Lambton, western Middlesex County, western Elgin County, Windsor-Essex, and Chatham-Kent.

The national weather agency said these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

It said this weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

Environment Canada said landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous.

They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

We're being urged to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously, and prepare to take shelter if one develops nearby.

These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
