Jury selected, Veltman trial to start Monday

The trial of Nathaniel Veltman is set to begin Monday, September 11.

The date was confirmed Wednesday morning following the selection of the final two jurors. Fourteen jurors will hear the case, though only 12 will make the ultimate decision as to Veltman's guilt or innocence.

Jury selection began in Windsor on Tuesday after Veltman pleaded not guilty to four counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

He is charged in the deaths of a Muslim family in London on June 6, 2021.

Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman's 74-year-old mother Talat Afzaal were killed while taking a walk at Hyde Park and South Carriage Roads. A now 11-year-old boy is the only survivor after a pickup truck hopped the curb and hit the family before driving off.

Veltman is accused of targeting the family and having right wing extremist views associated with white supremacy that motivated the attack.

The decision to move the trial from London to Windsor was made last year.
