Trudeau promises relief at the grocery store cash register

As grocery prices continue to climb across Canada, Justin Trudeau says he's calling grocery store executives to Ottawa.

As he closed out the Liberal caucus retreat in London on Thursday, the Prime Minister said he'll be asking for executives from Loblaw, Metro, Empire, Walmart and Costco to come up with a plan to stabilize prices by Thanksgiving.

If they don't, Trudeau is ready to go after their profit margins.

"If their plan doesn't provide real relief for the middle class and people working to join it, then we will take further action and we are not ruling anything out, including tax measures," Trudeau said to a room of applauding Liberal MPs.

Trudeau's remarks come as grocery prices continue to rise faster than the rate of inflation - with Stats Canada saying the cost of groceries was up 8.5 percent in July.

"It's not okay that our biggest grocery stores are making record profits while Canadians are struggling to put food on the table," Trudeau said.

Trudeau was flanked by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne for the announcement.

He also said the government is taking GST off the creation of purpose built rental units in an effort to ease the housing crisis.
