Hyundai and Kia recall 600,000 vehicles over fire risk

A brake fluid leak has prompted Hyundai and Kia to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles after 25 reported fires.

The Hyundai recall is for 2010 to 2015 Veracruz, Tucson, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Accent, Sante Fe Sport, and Equus vehicles. Kia plans to issue notices for 2010 to 2017 Sportage, Optima, Forte, Sorento, Soul, Rio, Cadenza, Rondo, Borrego, and K900 models.

According to Global News, the recall affects more than 600,000 vehicles.

The brake fluid can leak onto a control module controlling the ABS brakes, which can cause a short circuit and spark a fire even if the vehicle is parked and turned off.

Transport Canada advises drivers to park their vehicles outside and away from other vehicles and buildings until the necessary repairs are made.

Notices will go out to owners in mid-November.

Hyundai drivers reported 21 fires and 22 instances of smoke, burning and melting. Four fires were reported to Kia, along with an additional six cases of melted components.
