Canada ousted at World Juniors

Defending champion Team Canada has been eliminated from the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Sarnia Sting Head Coach Alan Letang and the Canadians fell 3-2 against Czechia in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

Canada was trailing 2-0 after the first period, and tied the game in the middle frame with goals from Matthew Wood and Jake Furlong.

The game appeared to have been heading into overtime, but Czechia's Jakub Stancl scored his second goal of the game with just 11 seconds remaining.

The win is a measure of revenge for Czechia, who lost to Canada in last year's gold medal game. Letang was an assistant on that squad.

Five members of that Czech team were in Tuesday's lineup, while forward Owen Beck was Canada's lone returnee.

A loss in the quarterfinals is rare for Team Canada.

It's just the third time Canada been defeated in the quarterfinal round in the past 26 tournaments.
