Sarnia police say a traffic stop early Thursday morning led to the seizure of drugs, a modified firearm, and the arrest of two people, including a wanted man.
Officers pulled over the vehicle on Murphy Road for a traffic violation at around 4 a.m., and said the driver had an open container of liquor.
During a search, police said they confiscated fentanyl and methamphetamine with a combined street value of around $2,700, $643 in Canadian currency, a digital scale, a Glock 17 tactical 9x19 airsoft gun, and an extended 3D printed handgun magazine.
Police said the gun was capable of firing .22 calibre live ammunition, and the accompanying 3D printed magazine was capable of holding 24 rounds.
It's alleged the driver initially gave police a false name, but it turned out the name of the person was someone that was prohibited from driving.
The accused was wanted on outstanding warrants from the Chatham-Kent area on two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and failing to attend court.
Jonathan Thompson, 39, of Wallaceburg, is facing charges including two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a restricted firearm, failure to comply with release orders, personation with intent to avoid arrest, and having open liquor.
The passenger, Cassandra Williams, 35, of Wallaceburg, is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, weapons offences, and failing to comply with a probation order.
Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis commented on the arrest.
"There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. Yet another reminder of the dangers faced by our front line officers in keeping our communities safe," said Davis. "What started out as a highway traffic act violation at 4 a.m., resulted in significant charges, drugs, and yet another illegal firearm removed from our streets. Excellent proactive work by our front line officers as this investigation rapidly unfolded."
