Old waste facility in Dresden hit with hefty fines

Fines totaling $65,000 have been levied against a former waste processing company in Dresden and its former property owner after they disobeyed clean up orders from the Ministry of Environment.

The convictions against the company known as 1230934 Ontario Limited are for not complying with ministry orders by accepting, processing, and transferring non-hazardous solid waste and having greenhouse waste piled at the site with liquid leachate running off from the material.

The convictions against Waste Wood Disposal Ltd. under the Ontario Water Resources Act and Environmental Protection Act are similar. Waste Wood was also fined for failing to submit to the ministry a detailed abatement plan and failing to ensure the maximum amount of waste stored on site did not exceed 75 tonnes.

The Ministry says the offences occurred between January 2020 and May 2021.

Meanwhile, it was announced on Tuesday that the waste disposal site proposed for Dresden will be subject to a full and comprehensive environmental assessment before it can proceed.

York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. in Mississauga wants to resume landfill operations and expand on-site waste handling, processing, and transfer operations at the dormant site, formerly known as the Dresden Tile Yard.
