The province of Ontario has invited everyone to enjoy a day at its provincial parks.
To celebrate Healthy Parks Healthy People Day this coming Friday, free admission is offered to all of Ontario's provincial parks.
Andrea Khanjin, Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, said the annual event is an affordable way for people to enjoy a summer outing.
"I invite all Ontarians to take advantage of this free pass to Ontario Parks, an opportunity to immerse yourselves in the joy and wonder of exploring the great outdoors," said Khanjin. "Whether you’re looking to get some exercise or seeking a fun and affordable day with your family, I hope this free day will give more people the opportunity to explore everything that their local provincial park has to offer."
Over the past six years, the Ontario government has invested $55.4 million for maintenance and upgrades, including roofed accommodations to help meet the demand of the province’s growing population.
The provincial government has also opened 300 new campsites and brought hydro services to 800 existing campsites at several parks in the Ontario Parks system.
Visitors interested in participating in the free event on Friday are "strongly encouraged" to obtain a vehicle permit online, and 75 parks provincewide offer the service up to five days in advance. This reduces the chance of being turned away or sitting in a long line because the park is at capacity.
